The Hip Girdle: Our Connection to Earth June 23 - 24, 2018 I 6 CEU's I $140 or $525 for all four
There is a common expression in yoga classroom settings, one that is birthed from the terrain of the subtle body - “root to rise”. This phrase originates from an understanding that in order to rise upward like the green shoot springing forth from its seed shell, one must also ground down into a foundation of form and formlessness. However, unlike the green shoot, as two-legged’s we lift and reroot as we move through the world. We can change the positioning of our feet, internally and externally rotate our legs and hips, and crouch low to the ground or spring upward toward the sky. Our mobile roots carry us through the world, transitioning us from one experience to the next. From paved sidewalks to rocky mountain passes, our hips, legs and feet invite us into a deeper conversation with the ground of our own belonging.
During this module we will direct our attention to the hip girdle, legs and feet. We will explore the dynamic interplay between our bodies and the earth, and come to understand the complexity of our own root systems. By breaking down alignment within movement, we will play with the genius design that makes us the bipedal beings that we are.
The Shoulder Girdle: Our Connection to Sky and Four-Leggedness August 25 - 26, 2018 I 6 CEU's I $140 or $525 for all four
A mentor of mine once asked the question “What is it your heart would like your arms to do out in the world?” As beings equipped with arms, hands and opposable thumbs, we have a particular form of embodiment that grants us the capacity to physically reach outward into the world and express ourselves through our reach. Equally so, we are able to physically draw the world in closer. We can pluck things out from our surrounding environment. Clasp, pull, press, and push. With our arms, we are able to reorient ourselves from that of two-leggedness to four-leggedness. Our arms and hands can, as we often find in yoga, become another pair of legs and feet. This versatility and mobility found within the shoulder girdle invites unique and diverse patterns of creativity and expression.
During this module we will direct our attention to the shoulder girdle, arms and hands. We will take a closer look at the relationship between our bodies, the surrounding environment, and the sky. We will explore the dynamism of our mobility, and play with our capacity to transmute, or literally trans-form, through the asanas. Instead of two legs, we’ll have four. Instead of upright, we’ll invert. Through our shoulder girdle, arms and hands, we will expand our perception of self and the world.
The Spine: Bridge Between Upperworld and Underworld October 20 - 21, 2018 I 6 CEU's I $140 or $525 for all four
Waves. The spine is made up of waves. Lordotic and kyphotic curves that expand and lengthen with every inhale, and contract and flex with every exhale. This body of ours, moved by a tidal breath, is in a constant state of flux. The lower terrain of our body is intimately connected to the upper terrain of our body. As beautiful mirror images and compliments of each other, the spine runs between both. Along the stretch of this vertebral column are varying degrees of movement and expression. Articulated through states of twisting, flexing, and extending, the spine invites us into a spherical dance of possibility.
During this module we will explore the spine, and its relationship to the hip girdle and shoulder girdle. We will journey through this central column, and come into deeper relationship with its complex and sophisticated movements and junction points. As bridge between the upper and lower halves of the body, we will explore the relationship it helps to foster between our roots (hip girdle) and our branches (shoulder girdle).
Somatic Alignment and Psychospiritual Aligment - Pathways to Self-Discovery January 19 - 20, 2019 I 6 CEU's I $140 or $525 for all four
When we speak of alignment, often what comes to mind are the mechanics of something tangible. There is a focus on bringing the parts of a whole into a relationship of equilibrium. When we speak of anatomical alignment within the yoga asanas we begin to discover the dynamism and interconnectivity of the body or soma. As we journey further through individual anatomy, we encounter alignment that moves in both intuitive and non-linear ways. Hip bones are influenced by sex, age, and history. Shoulders have varying degrees of mobility. Spines articulate differently depending on orientation. There is diversity in alignment.
What is most mysterious about somatic alignment is the potentiality for self-discovery that exists within and extends beyond our physical composition. Contained within the very cells of our being resides the individual form of a life waiting to be lived authentically. The uniqueness of our somatic alignment is a direct mirroring of our psychospiritual alignment. We are embodied beings, and as we begin to discover our physical alignment, we have the opportunity to discover our own unique calling. A calling that finds form and expression through our body. Aligning muscles, bones, ligaments, joints and more can, if given our attention and care, draw us closer to our individual truths that have the potential to change our lives and the lives of those around us.
During this module we will begin to explore our individual alignment, and its relationship to how we embody ourselves in the world. We will draw from our unique experiences and personal history to discover the ways the body has, all this time, been speaking. We will practice listening to the body by reacquainting ourselves with its language, and discover the messages hidden within our unique form.
