“Beauty and seduction are Natures tools for survival because we protect what we fall in love with. It opens our hearts and makes us realize we are a part of Nature, that we’re not separate from it. When we see ourselves in Nature it also connects us to each other because it’s clear that it’s all connected and one. When people see my images a lot of times they’ll say “Oh - My - God!” Have you ever wondered what that meant? The “Oh” means it caught your attention. It makes you present, makes you mindful. The “My” means it connects with something deep inside your soul. It creates a gateway for your inner voice to rise up and be heard. And "God"… God is that personal journey we all want to be on. To be inspired. To feel that we’re connected to a Universe that celebrates life.” - Louie Schwartzberg, TED Talk
To feel that we’re connected to a Universe that celebrates life.
As a teacher, I spend a significant amount of time reflecting on what I'm teaching, why I'm teaching what I teach, and how I might do things differently. One ever-present question that circles about me like a Honeybee longing for the sweet nectar of a beautiful Flower is how to reconnect the human psyche to a sacred and wild cosmos? To bridge the human mind that often finds itself contained by four walls, a ceiling and a floor both literally and metaphorically. To help tear down the building we're in, and see a brilliant and vast sky. To both marvel at and be perplexed by the great Mystery that is Life.
When I venture into the Mountains, or stand in stillness with Horses, or listen to the sweet song of Birds, I wonder - how do I bring THIS -this beautiful experience with these incredible beings into a place that is designed to shut these elements out? How do we help each other remember that we are children of the Earth and Stars, when current social systems and institutions that have such a strong foothold in our world would have human beings believe anything but?
To re-member our place in the majesty of Life is to dis-member a way of being that offers safety and the living of a small existence.
It means relinquishing the long held belief that we human beings are the center of the Universe, and instead returning to a truth far greater - that we are a part of a much larger and seemingly infinite web of existence. It means that our actions are not just in service to our closest of kin, to our cities or states, or even to our nations. Rather, our actions are in service to the wondrously animate and wildly intelligent Earth and Cosmos that we are gifted and privileged to live in.
I ask you this: what in your life compels you to whisper or shout "Oh - My - God/dess!"
I guarantee that what you come up with has little to do with how much money you have, what your occupation is, and what your perceived social standing in life might be.
What makes you come alive in this life?! And in that coming alive, do you feel your place in the place of everything?
